What to Do Before You Get to Our Office

If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, taking the right steps before you arrive can help reduce pain and improve the chances of saving your tooth.

Below are simple, safe guidelines to follow until you can be seen.

Severe Tooth Pain

  • Rinse your mouth gently with warm water.

  • Floss carefully to remove any trapped food.

  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed.

  • Do not place aspirin directly on your gums.

If the pain is persistent, worsening, or accompanied by swelling, call us immediately.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Time is critical.

  • Pick the tooth up by the crown (the chewing surface), not the root.

  • Gently rinse it with water if dirty — do not scrub or remove tissue.

  • If possible, place the tooth back into the socket and hold it in place.

  • If that isn’t possible, store it in milk or saliva.

  • Come to our office right away — ideally within 60 minutes.

Quick action greatly increases the chances of saving the tooth.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.

  • Save any broken pieces if possible.

  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to reduce swelling.

  • Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth.

Even small cracks can worsen without treatment.

Swelling or Suspected Infection

Swelling in the gums, face, or jaw may indicate an abscess or spreading infection.

  • Do not apply heat to the area.

  • Use a cold compress to reduce swelling.

  • Call our office immediately.

Facial swelling can become serious if left untreated, so it’s important not to delay care.

Lost Crown or Filling

  • Keep the area clean.

  • Avoid chewing on that side.

  • You may use temporary dental cement from a pharmacy if needed.

If you’re experiencing pain, contact us as soon as possible.
